Monitoring of Heavy Equipment Operators’ Cognition for Field Safety
SUMMARY
Safety accidents related to heavy equipment have been sporadic in the field. Given a considerable portion of these accidents can be attributed to operators’ sub-optimal cognitive states, such as cognitive overload, mind wandering, and reduced attention, we employ a less-invasive form of brain sensor to operators during their field operations.
This allows us to gather insights into the specific conditions that lead to these sub-optimal cognitive states. With the newfound knowledge, we enhance the operation interfaces design, setting and operation guidelines, and relevant regulations and policies to improve overall safety.
